I have written the children’s books The Quest for Quinnie, Pinboy, Hip Hopper the Hip Hop Grasshopper, andMiss Olivia goes to Bolivia. Recently published is my wit and humor memoir, My Parents Told me to NEVER put anything into writing, Oops! I have been published for humorous columns in The Keene Sentinel, Keene, NH and the Our Town located in Charlestown, NH. You may have read my article, “Believe”, in Chicken Soup for the Soul: A Book of Miracles. Presently, I am collaborating with my sons writing a Revolutionary War historical novel, New Hampshire Warrior. New Hampshire Warrior is based on my great, great, great, grandfather’s war history during that developing time of our country. The last, but not final, is an adventure with my younger granddaughter, Isabella Mae, what should we make today? I have visited schools in New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, also various Libraries, Winter Carnivals, Nursing Homes, Rotaries, Cable Television, Retired Teacher's Organization, and Book Stores. I adore doing these visits and have retired recently from working in education for over a quarter of a century!
Author Visit Information
I can work with a small group or a crowd as large as 45, classroom or an organization. I like to have approximately 40 minutes a session. Half Day Visit, up to three 40 minute sessions $250 Full Day Visit, up to five 40 minute sessions $350 Special One Hour Visit $150 ⦁Travel fees apply for trips beyond two hour ride from my home, Charlestown, NH. $0.50/mile. ⦁Visits requiring overnight stays or long distance travel will include accommodations and mileage fees. ~School Setting~ After a visit is booked for a school setting, I will email an order form for the teachers to copy and pass out to the students. Please do two weeks in advance of the visit, to order and have books the day of the event. I like to have the copies autographed by the end of the school day for the teachers to put in the student's backpacks. I never sign and hand out books in front of students as it hurts feelings of children of families who could not afford or chose not to order a copy. I will discuss the writing process, do an interactive exercise with them, (no materials needed from the classroom teacher, I'll have it) and a time for questions from the students. I do hope all students can make an attempt at being there, amongst their Special Schedules, and that no one is absent! Organization Visit After an organization visit is booked, I will need a contact person for details of event, directions, and where to get coffee in town!!! I will discuss the writing and self-publishing process, the additional educational content of each of my children's books, and a time for questions from the group. I am not the least bit shy and fully enjoy the interaction with a group of interested writing souls.
I highly recommend Laurel A. Smith to make an author's visit to your school. She is incredibly entertaining as she explains the writing process to students. Her teaching experience allows her to meet the needs of her audience, the students. My students were talking favorably about Mrs. Smith for days following her classroom visit. In addition, her books continue to be enjoyed in classrooms to this day.Elisa Baird O’Brien Wilbraham MA
As Co-Chair of the Alpha Delta Kappa Northeast Regional Conference, I reached out to Laurel Smith. Initially, I was looking for donated New Hampshire made items to put in the "Welcome Bags" for the attendees and the presenters. She offered to meet me halfway at the King Arthur Flour Factory and store in Norwich, VT. When I met her, she glowed like a long lost friend. She was so at ease talking about her mustard company and about her writings. She offered me her book, "Miss Olivia goes to Bolivia" and I could tell she was a successful author! She was enthusiastic and so positive about writing books for children. I knew we just had to have her as a workshop presenter. So what turned out as a request for free goodies, ended up being an interview to be a presenter at the Conference. The "Laurel Writes and So Can You!" workshop was very well attended. I have heard many positive comments about it. I am thrilled that I met her. It has boosted my desire to revisit my old rough drafts for children's books. And, to top it off, we love her "Ruth's Mustards"! Judith Boulet Landaff, NH
